Auckland is a multi-cultural and cosmopolitan city with a population of approximately 1.4 million and was founded in 1840 by Sir William Hobson. To celebrate the founding of the city a regatta is held on Auckland Anniversary Day in January of each year, thus giving rise to the name "City of Sails".
The Ara Lodge 348 Irish Constitution was founded on 5 September 1842 when a dispensation was signed by the Officers of The Social Lodge No 260 I.C. in Sydney N.S.W. Australia. The first meeting took place on February 9 1843 and since that day Irish Freemasonry in New Zealand has flourished.
Only four Irish Constitution Lodges now remain in NZ, namely:
Ara Lodge No. 348 in Auckland,
The De Burgh Adams Lodge No. 446 in New Plymouth,
The Lodge of Light No. 454 in Thames, and
Lodge St. Patrick No. 468 in Dunedin.
All of these Lodges keep in close contact with each other and visit each other regularly. They operate under the umbrella of the Provincial Grand Lodge of New Zealand, Grand Lodge of Ireland.
Any Brother visiting Auckland is assured a very warm welcome. Our meeting nights are detailed below and we will be pleased to have your company at any of these meetings.
